MESSAGE ANCHORED BY THE GENERAL SUPERINTENDENT.
TOPIC: CHRIST'S SUPPLICATION BEFORE HIS VICARIOUS SACRIFICE.
MARK 14:22-42.
I welcome you to the Bible Study tonight, your own Bible Study, make it yours, make it personal, so that you will know that every time, if you were not there, you will be wondering who is going to be there. You ought to be here evertime, and we pray that, the Lord will open your eyes and you will behold wondrous things out of the word of God tonight and everytime IN Jesus Name Amen.
Tonight, we come back to the Gospel according to St Mark, the Gospel, that's a good news, and now we are getting near the time of the finality of that good news being effected. Jesus Christ is moving now rapidly to the Cross, and very soon the arrest will come, the betrayal will come, and very soon the crucifixion will come, and death of the Lord Jesus Christ on our behalf as our substitute, as our Saviour and as the final sacrifice, very soon, that will come, and then eventually, the burial and the resurrection of Jesus Christ will come. We are moving fast to that event, and then He will accomplish everything the Father sent Him to accomplish, and you hear Him say, "IT IS FINISHED".
As we are coming to the Mark chapter 14 tonight, there's a lot of things here we need to learn about the caption of the "CHRIST'S SUPPLICATION BEFORE THE VICARIOUS SACRIFICE". You understand in the Old Testament, the sacrifice has been offered, but now Jesus Christ is going to offer the final sacrifice. The word "VICARIOUS" means, is for another one, is for you and what Jesus did, the sacrifice and the price He paid for our redemption and for our Salvation, and for the totality of the blessings of God upon our lives is a VICARIOUS sacrifice. But then, before that time, that is before the crucifixion, before the Vicarious sacrifice, we have His supplication and now as we look at this tonight, we are considering that under the three sub-heading.
POINT ONE: THE BREAD AND THE BLOOD OF THE NEW COVENANT.
MARK 14:22-26.
Actually, after the last Passover, you remember in our last studies, we studied about the Passover, and we've gone through the first passover, the last Passover, the final passover and the fulfilled passover. Now after that, Jesus Christ now instituted the "LORD'S SUPPER", He introduced the bread, the symbol and emblem of His body, He introduced the wine that is the fruit of the vine which is an emblem of His Blood. And He said, "THIS IS MY BODY THAT IS BROKEN FOR YOU",And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body. And He took the cup, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them: and they all drank of it. And He said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God.
this is the Body of Christ that is given for us and it is the New Covenant. And after they have taken the Lord's Supper, they sang together and they went out into the mount of Olive. Sometimes when we sing, you think that singing is peculiar to us, we need to understand that, Christ also sang, and His disciples also sang. And after that, they went out into the mount of Olive.
I. The Remembrance of His Priceless Body. Mark 14:22; 1 Corinthians 11:23-24; Isaiah 53:4-6; 1 Peter 2:24; John 19:1-3,17-18,30,33-37.
After they have finished the passover, and that was for the Israel, and for the Jews. And when JESUS Christ finished the sacrifice, the passover will not have any value anymore, but now, everything will center on Christ, so now, He is instituting the Lord's Supper which is to commemorate the Salvation and the redemption of humanity. Remember, they have finished eating the passover, they have fulfilled all that was written concerning the passover, now Jesus Christ took bread, He blessed the bread, and He broke the break because His body was going to be beaten, smitten, broken and slain for us, and because of that, He's illustrating that, and then He gave them. And it's a piece of bread and yet it represented His body.
Paul the Apostle told the People of the Corinthians about that, and He said, he was not giving them, he was not preaching or teaching them from idea of his head or with the parable of proverbs he gathered, he said, for I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord JESUS the same night in which He was betrayed took bread. And Paul the apostle was telling them to always remember the Lord's Supper. We are also to remember the Body of the Lord JESUS Christ, His body was beaten, smitten and broken and it was slain for us. That Body of Christ had a purpose, His body was stricken, it was smitten, and that body was afflicted and in that, He illustrated when He broke the bread, He said, My body is going to be broken, by body is going to be smitten, they wounded His body, and they brought the crown of thorns upon Him, and they threw the spare at His side, His body literary was bruised for our iniquities. And so you should always remember what Christ did, that the blessed body of Christ, the Precious body of Christ, the Priceless body of Christ was broken for you, His body was broken for all of us. Then we understand, if you're sick, by His stripes you're healed. In fact, we were told that, His stripes heals all manner of sicknesses. He healed us Spiritually, He healed us Physically.
He healed us Emotionally, He healed us in every way because of His precious Body that was broken, and He says, we should remember that all the time. And anytime you have challenge, any time you have affliction, anytime you have sickness, anytime there's any arrow and any attacks coming, look at the Lord Jesus Christ in your mind, and by Faith claim what He has done for you.
II. The Redemption Through His Precious Blood. Mark 14:23-24; 1 Corinthians 11:25-26; Ephesians 1:7; 1 Peter 1:15-19; 1 John 1:5-7; Hebrews13:12-14,2.-21.
Jesus Christ is saying unto us, that this is His blood of the New covenant, the old covenant is passed, all the sacrifices of the Old covenant is gone, He says, we are no more continuing in the Passover which was given to the children of Israel to commemorate the Old Testament. But now, Jesus Christ is the Center and the foundation and the Pilot of the New Testament. His body and His blood represented all that you need in the New covenant. You understand when Paul the Apostle was teaching People about that, he was not there when the Supper was taken because he wasn't converted at that time, it was years later, after Christ has ascended to Heaven, after the Pentecost that Paul the Apostle became converted. But the something that happened at that night before the betrayal, before the crucifixion, the something was revealed unto Paul. Maybe you were not there when they started this DEEPER CHRISTIAN LIFE MINISTRY, And as you come on, and as you joined in, all that God gave us at the very beginning, the whole word, and He commanded us and He told us ....Earnestly contend for the Faith once delivered unto the, you cannot say you were not there at that time, and you cannot day you've not given your life to Christ at that time, and you cannot say, that's for the people that began this church. It has been revealed that we should earnestly contend for the Faith once delivered unto the Saints. You remember, when the Lord's Supper was taken, Paul the Apostle was not there, but he came later, he was born again later, and the something the Lord committed into his hand, and now he reminded the people and he said this in the 1 Corinthians chapter 11, for as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till He come. Paul the apostle looked back at what Christ has done when he said, "IT IS FINISHED", Salvation is now available, what He did in the past is now available, sanctification is now available, and all redemption is now available. Here as you look back, then you look up also, you look forward because He says, in taking the Lord's Supper, you show the Lord's death in the past till He come. That is the future. You're looking back at what He Has done, and you're looking back at what has the Blood done. The blood of Jesus Christ gives us redemption, forgiveness of sin, Salvation and everything you need in life. Jesus Christ does not want us to take the Lord's Supper as ritual, and as tradition as other People usually do. He wants us to remember that, the body was broken for us, our healing is assured, He wants us to remember the blood that was shed for us, the Lord is telling us that, salvation comes through the Blood of the Lamb, sanctification comes through the Blood of the Lamb, a new life comes through the Blood of the Lamb we have left the old covenant, we have left the passover, and we now come to the Lord's, and at the time of the Supper, His body broken for us, we are healed by His stripes, and His blood shed for us, we are saved.
III. The Revelation of His Purified Bride. Mark 14:25; Luke 22:28-30; Ephesians 5:25-27; Titus 2:14; Revelation 19:7-9; 1 Peter 1:22-23; Revelation 19:7-9; 1 John 3:3-4. The Lord had been telling the disciples that, He will be betrayed, but He says, that's not the end, He says He will be taken away from them, and now they were sorrowful because He tells them that He's leaving, but that is not the end, He'll go and come back again, and He's gone to Heaven, but He's still coming back. He went to prepare a place for us, but that is not the end, He's still going to gather all the Saints unto Himself, there's a temporary separation now between the Messiah and the Redeemed, there's a temporary separation now between the Master and the Followers, and between the Shepherd and the sheep, there's a temporary separation now in taking the Lord's Supper, He says, He will not be physically there when they are taking the Lord's Supper, but a day will come, when He comes back again, that's at the rapture, rapture will take place, and then we shall be quickened, we shall be changed, and we shall be with Him forever, and at that time, we will eat with Him, we will drink with Him. He says He will be going away and when He come again, He will be fellowshipping together with us, and we will eat with Him. This one is literal, this is not talking about something spiritual, He's talking about the real Kingdom, that mean then, the time will come when we will see Him as He is, we are purified, and we are sanctified, we are part of the Bride of the Lamb, and we shall be with Him. And when that time comes, we shall sit with Him in His Kingdom, there will be time for Joy, there will be reason for Joy, I pray, you will not be missing at that time IN Jesus Name Amen. But if you're going to be there, You have to be a saint, you have to be saved, you have to be sanctified, you have to be purified, and you have to be part of the bride to take part in this marriage Supper of the Lamb, that's a day come that He will establishes His Kingdom, and then we will sit with Him and we will eat and drink with Him at the marriage Supper of the Lamb, I pray, you will be there In Jesus Name Amen.
POINT TWO: THE BACKSLIDING AND BREAKING OF NUMEROUS CONSECRATIONS.
MARK 14:27-31.
Jesus saith unto His disciples, that all of them shall be offended because of Him this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered. But after that I am risen, I will go before you into Galilee.
This is the section where after Jesus Christ has revealed to His disciples that He was going to be betrayed and then He will be slain, He will be killed, and then everyone of His disciples began to make consecration, in their consecration, they said they will go to die with Him, that no matter what happens, nothing will separate them from Christ.
The Lord was always looking forward, there are many people that always looking back at what happened to them in the past years ago, and they carry that baggage with them, they never look forward, but Jesus Christ was always looking forward, He said, He's going to be crucified, and He said they shouldn't be sorrowful because of that, because something else is going to happen, He said, He will rise, but after that He's risen, He will be taken up to Heaven and then He will come back for His saints. You should always look forward like JESUS did, look at the promises of God and look forward, look forward at the prophecies of the Bible, and look forward at the privileges of the Bible, and look forward, whatever happened in the past, whatever is happening today always look forward. In the case of Jesus Christ, at that night that He was going to be crucified, He was looking forward. And this teaches us that, whatever Happened in the night, and whatever happens during the week, we should always look forward, the situation we are will not always be like this, resurrection power will come and you will rise from that situation.
And Jesus saith unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered. But Peter said unto him, Although all shall be offended, yet will not I. But in his consecration, he was not thoughtful, he was not sensitive to what Christ has said, he made the consecration and he emphasized his consecration again, and he spake the more vehemently, and he said, If I should die with thee, I will not deny thee in any wise. Likewise also said they all. We need to understand that, it was not only Peter that made a consecration, others also repeated the same thing that they would die with Christ.
I. The Prediction of Our Infallible Christ. Mark 14:27-28; Zechariah 13:7; Matthew 24:12-13. You see, JESUS Christ knew that scripture will be fulfilled and because of that, He reminded them of the scripture, He said, I Am the Good Shepherd, and because He's a good Shepherd, He gave His life for the sheep and He said this night, that was the night of the betrayal, He said this scripture will be fulfilled, that He will give His life for the Salvation, for the redemption, and random of all that will believe. God has divinity, He has human, He's Man and He's God as well. He said, He will smite the shepherd, and the sheep will scattered, this is referring to JESUS Christ, He will smite the One that is to give His life for us, and now He proclaimed that, it was the prediction of infallible Christ, and they should have understood that whatever Christ says will come to pass, but instead of them to agree with that and go and pray that they will not betray Christ.
II. The Profession of Incapable Christians. Mark 14:29-31; Luke 9:57-58; Galatians 4:15; 1 John 3:18; James 2:17,20,26.
After Jesus Christ has revealed what He was going to pass through, Peter said unto Him, Although all shall be offended, yet will not I. Peter would have be thinking about the Old Testament People like Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego who decided to died for Faith, but you understand it's not something we just say, that because Shadrach Mechsach and Abednego did it, then we can do it, but you know what, without prayer you cannot, without the Grace of God you cannot, without backbone, you cannot do it, without soaking yourself in the grace of God, and without soaking yourself in the might of God, you cannot do it. Or maybe Peter was thinking of Daniel who went to the Lion's den, he thought he can and he will, you cannot just say because Daniel did it in the Old covenant, now therefore you can do it because we are in the better covenant, all those people have prayed before they went through all those things, and if we must, then we must pray. And you remember when JESUS told them to pray that the Spirit is willing but the flesh is weak, Peter didn't prayed, the disciples didn't prayed, they just thought others are going it, so they can do it as well, and so Peter was making a kind of consecration that was impotent, he was making a consecration that didn't have any backbone, that didn't have any power, and Peter said unto Him, Although all shall be offended, yet will not I. He made a consecration, but he couldn't stayed by that consecration. You see, we who are born again, who are Christians, now that we are born again, we are children of God, then we must pray, and we must pray earnestly, we must pray like the way Jesus Christ prayed, we must make sure we commit ourselves to the Lord afresh, and everytime that temptation will come, whatever the pressure will come, by the Grace of God we will stand, not in your strength, not in our boastfulness, but by the grace of God we will stand. And that grace will make us to stand. John admonished us and he said, My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. If you're born again, if you're a child of God, you must remember when John said, "My little children", he was referring to all the believers, because he was much advanced in age at that time, he says, we should not love the Bible in word only, we shouldn't love ourselves in word only, we shouldn't love the Christian's faith in word only, but in deeds and in Truth, don't make empty profession and don't make professions that are not grounded, don't make professions that are not soak with prayer, that are not soak with real consecration, the profession without practice is vain, if your consecration does not follow with action, such consecration is dead, if your profession does not have any root, if if does not have any corresponding action, such profession is dead being alone. Profession without practice makes us vain, promising the Lord, consecration without corresponding action makes us vain. If we cannot fulfil what we are saying, it makes us like people that are not valuable because that profession and consecration does not backup with prayers, and because we are not laying ourselves on the altar once again, our profession is vain.
III. The Promise of Incompetent Cowards. Mark 14:31,50; Psalms 78:9-10; Matthew 21:30. And Jesus saith unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered. But after that I am risen, I will go before you into Galilee. But Peter said unto him, Although all shall be offended, yet will not I.
And Jesus saith unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this day, even in this night, before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. But he spake the more vehemently, If I should die with thee, I will not deny thee in any wise. Likewise, all of them said. Many times we could have thought it was only Peter that said the more vehemently that he's going to follow Christ to the Cross, it wasn't only Peter, the other apostles parroted what Peter said, just like you hear another person making consecration, and as we are in dropping of prayers of other people, and on the consecration of other people, we are like parrot, parrot say the same thing, we live like parrot, we pronounce the same thing, although the parrot has the ability to copy voice of a man and say what the man is saying, the parrot does not understand what he's saying, he's just parroting what he has heard all the time. All these other disciples, these cowards disciples, they said what Peter said, but there was no strength, they were cowards, and after their profession, when that time came that they came to took Jesus away, they all forsook Him and they fled. The Lord is telling us something, that as we promised the Lord that we will never go back, we should not just profess it, but we must pray concerning that, so that the Lord will give us the Grace to fulfil our profession. Sometimes, what you hear in the Monday Bible Study, or sometimes what you hear in the Thursday's Revival service, or in any of the weekly activities, that thing you hear grips you, and it has a great impact on you, and it makes you to say, Lord, I'm ready now, I will go with you, and we don't pray on it, that promise by itself is not sufficient, that consecration by itself is not sufficient, without going to inner chamber, without going into your room and kneeling down between you and God, and opening the Bible to claim all the promises of God, and without you make sure you soak it into your heart, into your life with prayer, that profession is incompetent.
POINT THREE: THE BURDEN AND BLEEDING OF OUR NOTABLE CHRIST.
MARK 14:32-42.
Christ prayed, and He told His disciples that, He's sorrow unto death, and in the prayer,m He prayed, He was bleeding, He was actually sweating blood, He took the sins of the whole world upon Him, He was the Lamb of God that is to take the sin of the world away, and His heart was bleeding because of us, and because of our sins. You think about JESUS Christ the very Son of God, the Mighty One, the Holy One, you think about JESUS Christ that has power, He has Authority and yet He didn't say He's ready for Calvary because that has been decided before the world began, but He said, ...while I shall pray.... If Christ our Lord has to prayed, then you too you have to pray, and I pray that, this same understanding you will have and you will pray IN Jesus Name Amen.
I. The Sorrow of our Sin-Bearing Substitute.
Mark 14:32-34; Isaiah 53:4-6,10-12; Lamentation 1:12; 2 Corinthians 7:10-11; Matthew 5:3-4. The Lord Jesus Christ just discussed with the disciples about His death, and then Peter made that consecration, and Jesus said, Peter, you cannot fulfil that consecration, but you ought to pray because you're weak, and as He was now going to pray, He took with Him Peter, and James and John. You know, there are some leaders and pastors, they act on what has not even happened, let's learn from leadership style of Jesus Christ, and let us follow Him, and if that thing has not happened, and you're not sure that thing will even happen, you need to pray, Jesus Christ knew it will happen, and yet He takes with Him Peter and James and John, and Jesus saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry ye here, and watch. and you want to ask a question that, why was Jesus sorrowful? And what is the reason of this sorrowful? It's because He was carrying the burden of sorrows of all the people of the world, it's because He was carrying all the sufferings the people of the world will go through, He was carrying that, and because of that, it came as much on Him and as the Father will forsake sinners, and if there's no redemption, if there's no Redeemer, there will be no forgiveness of sins. The Father was going to forsake Him, He knew that and He knew that He was going to bear the punishments of the sins of the whole world, What He did was for our sins, He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with his stripes we are healed. And because we went astray, He didn't went astray, He was spotless, He was sinless, He was Holy, He was bearing the punishments of our sins and the sorrows we should have go through, that's why He had the sorrow. Check up in history, check up in the Bible, you will see there is no sorrow like the sorrow Jesus bare. He took our sins, He took our sorrows, Jesus bare that, and if you have not realized that in your life, you should do that now, let it grips you, and let it be a burden on you, and let it be like an arrow that is throws into your heart because He borne this sorrow for you. That sorrow led Him to supplication.
II The supplication of our sinless Saviour. Matthew 14:35-39; Luke 21:41-44; 1 Peter 4:7; 5:6-9; Hebrews 5:7. It was sorrow that led Him to supplication, and He went forward a little, He fell on the ground, and He prayed. He wasn't thinking about His posture now, (standing in a dignify way, kneeling down in a careful majestic way, or holding His hand and raising His hand to heaven, and then looking up to heaven). No, He wasn't doing that, now the burden was much and the sorrow was much, that was why He went to prayed.
If you have a challenge, and you ought to pray, do you take that to the Lord in prayer? Do you do like the Lord Jesus Christ did? Even if you have to pray alone, even if you have to take that challenge to the Lord alone, and look at the Bible, and look at the promise of God, and look at the prophecies of the word, and pray and battle it through all alone by yourself. There are people that say they would have been saved and healed, but nobody is praying for them, you can pray for yourself and be saved, you can pray for yourself and claim the promises of the healing. Already Jesus Christ said, it is finished, when there's nobody to support you, when there is nobody to surround you, when there's nobody to lift you up, when there's nobody to help you, when there's no partner with you in prayer, you can do like JESUS Christ, afterall, He has borne all your burden, He has taken your sorrow, all you need to do now is to look up to Calvary and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and salvation will come, and healing will come, and redemption will come, and all that He has paid for On the Cross of Calvary will come therefore, don't give excuse anymore, Jesus prayed alone, He borne the burden alone, go to the Lord and pray, and the Lord will answer your prayers Jesus Christ has His Own burden, He has prayed, and now He came to His disciples and said, even though He prophesied and predicted that Peter is going to be tempted and he's going to deny Him, He's not interested that Peter fall, if he will watch and pray, the Lord will give him the Grace, it's a conditional prophecy, there are some people, they make a prophecy and maybe they got it from God, and they are not going to help the people they are prophesying to, they are not going to help people to come out of that danger, they will not tell them that they ought to pray, because they want that fellow to fall into that danger without any remedy, so that it'll prove that they are the good prophets of God. Christ was not like that, even though He knew that Peter was going to denied Him, He told Peter the way out, He told Peter to watch and pray. Let's hear from Christ, He's still saying the same thing today, although He said Peter will betray Him,and that's not His wish for Him, is a conditional prediction. Jesus Christ told Peter that, If he will watch and pray, he will not fall into temptation. Even though you pray and the answer has not yet come, pray for,.that's exactly what Jesus Christ did, He prayed and God answered that prayer. He prayed earnestly, He Prayed fervently, that's how the Lord wants us to pray. God answered His prayers, and God sent an Angel from Heaven and the Angel strengthened Him. He prayed the first time, He Prayed the second time, and He Prayed the third time, and He offered that with strong crying and tears, the devil wanted to kill Him right there in the garden of Gethsemane with the burden and load, and His heart was broken already, and His heart was bleeding already, and the blood was woozy out of the pulse of the body, and when He was sweating, it wasn't water coming out from His sweat, it was blood coming out from His sweat, and the Angel came and he helped Him and He did not died there at the garden of Gethsemane. He came up, and He rose up in strength, and after that, He had backbone and courage and those Jew came and they took Him away. They put the crown of thorns on His head, and the blood still came out, but that didn't killed Him, they did alot to Him, and there was strength and power, and He went to the Cross and His hand were stretched on the Cross, and then He was able to say everything He ought to say, there was no forgetfulness, strength has come because of His prayers, and He said, Father, forgive them for they know not what they are doing, and eventually He said, "IT IS FINISHED". He was strengthened, He didn't died on the way going to the Cross because He must die on the Cross of Calvary if we are going to be saved.
III. The Submission of Our Spotless Sanctifier.
Mark 14:36; Matthew 26:39,42,44; Phillipians 2:5-13. The Lord submitted to the will of God, and if we have the same commitment of Christ, if we have the same mind of consecration of Christ, if have that same submission to the Will of God, if we have the same mind of submission to the word of God, and if we have the same mind of everything the Lord will permit in our lives, don't be taken by surprise and don't allow anything to happen to you that you will not be able to bear, let the mind of Christ be in you, that's what the Lord expects of you, that you will be humble as He humbled Himself, if you're born again, you will have the mind of Christ in you, if you're identify with Christ, you pray like He prayed, you identify with Christ, you allow the will of God to be done in your life, you identify with Him, and you be like Him. It takes the Lord Jesus Christ Himself by strength and Prayer to fulfilled His Ministry. Be like JESUS, act like JESUS, depend on Him, he will finalize all those problems you're thinking about.
IN CONCLUSION: We have seen what Christ has done, we have seen what the Apostles and the disciples promised, but they didn't prayed and they didn't made themselves go on their knees or stand on their knees and pray, so that they can have power and so that they can have the courage and fortitude to be what God wanted them to be. God wants to work in you, He wants you to submit unto Him, and He wants you to be saved, He wants you to be sanctified, He wants to fulfil all His promises in your life, and this is the moment now, with all that we have heard in this Bible Study, is not ended because we are now going to take it to the Lord in prayer, and you will say, Lord, like you help my Saviour, my Substitute, my Sanctifier, help me too. I want to be all I ought to be, pray and let God work in you what to will, and what to do of His good pleasure, take what you have learnt to God in prayer, He has given us His broken body, and that broken body is for your healing, His broken body was for you, and you will have all the promises of God fulfilled in your life, He has given us His Blood, this is the blood that grants us Redemption and because He gives us that blood for our redemption, you can go to the Lord in prayer, it's not enough that we have heard and studied and read word of God, we must go to the Lord in prayer, that is how our strength will come, and that's how the experience of Salvation will come, and that's how the experience of freedom from sin and victory triumph over temptations will come, go to the Lord in prayer and that's how sanctification will come.
