THE MIRAGE EXPERIENCE

TEXT: SAMUEL 1822-30

KEY VERSE: And Saul commanded his servants, saying, Commune with David secretly and say, Behold, the king hath delight in thee, and all his servants love thee: now therefore be the king's son in law" (l Samuel 18:22).

A mirage is optical illusion in the desert, sea or plane surface during sunny day. It occurs under certain atmospheric conditions, in which objects appear to be real from a distance. An observer Viewing it would hope it is a lake in the distance if he is travelling across the desert. As the thirsty traveller moves on in expectation of a stream to quench his thirst, he

discovers the water he appeared to have seen has moved or disappeared. It is unreal.

David was ensnared in that illusory hope when the murderous King Saul presented a marriage proposal to make him his in-law. The devilish conspiracy to eliminate the young son of Jesse

had been with splendid prospects. Who would not readily grab a lifetime chance to be a member of royal family through marriage to a king's daughter?

Yet, not all that glitters is gold. Many hell-inspired counsel and propositions come our way wrapped with good intentions. But their contents are deadly. The only way to avoid their enticement is to seek the Lord. He can guide {he avoid their believer who reaches out to Him for help. David did not go to God for approval before plunging into the deal with Saul. It was unusual of him; still, the Lord was with him. He leapt over the first hurdle schemed to have him killed by the Philistines through Saul's demand.

Believers ought to be wary about agreements they enter because there are false brethren who are seeking to trap us in temptations of all sorts and distract us from being ready for the rapture. We need to turn over every detail of our secular and ministerial life to God in prayer to avoid falling into the false hope of a mirage.

THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: MATTHEW 6-7

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Focus on the Messiah, not the mirage.

ADVANCEMENT IN ADVERSITY

TEXT: EXODUS 14:13-21

MEMORY VERSE: "My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience"(JAMES 1:2-3).

The life of a man can be likened to that of a tree which is subject to unpredictable circumstances. The tree is often hit by harsh weather, storms, fire, earthquake and so on. If cut down, it can spring up again and be restored to life. In like manner, man experiences tough times in all spheres of life, but would bounce back strong if he is determined.

From the text, the children of Israel were faced with possible death from the Egyptians; and the Red Sea was a barrier to their escape. This adversity seemed insurmountable for them, but God in His infinite power rescued them in a miraculous way.

This adversity came as the children of Israel took an important step of breaking free from slavery to serve God. This implies that the devil is ready to hinder people from being saved from sin.

Charles Stanley says, "The shortest distance between a problem and a solution is the distance between your knees and the floor." You should never act like the children of Ephraim who despite being armed, turned back in the day of battle (Psalm 78:9).

QUOTE: It can spring up again.

CHALLENGE: Tough times never last, but tough people do.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, give me the enablement and strength to overcome.
