DIVINE WRATH

TEXT: Amos 8:1-10

KEY VERSE:

“And he said, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A basket of summer fruit. Then said the LORD unto me, The end is come upon my people of Israel; I will not again pass by them any more.” - (Amos 8:2)

A critical review and analysis of the state of things in the world right now reveals that all is not well with humanity. We do not need to look too far to realise this. The signs are there for all to see. We have the global problem of insecurity right now. Religious and sectarian violence take place everywhere with many losing their lives.

The Lord communicated through Amos His intention to wreck similar havoc in Israel, since they had already asked His prophets to leave and not prophesy in their cities. He equally condemned the oppression of the poor, the human trafficking and slavery that took place as the land sunk into anarchy. He promised to allow a famine to devastate the land and leave behind so many dead bodies that would be buried in silence. Their feasts would then be turned into mourning as a season of spiritual darkness sets in.

The world, like in the days of Amos, has turned her back on God and readily accepts sin with both hands. Children and youths are exposed to immorality and violence every day through the media and the internet. They benefit from the latest technology and developments in science, but do not understand their duties to God and humanity because the reading/study of His word is shut out of manyo schools.

We would rather have our 5-year olds taught about evolution and how marriage is no longer a union of a man and a woman. We are free to love anyone or anything, including animals and trees. All these would attract God’s wrath unless we repent.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:

Rejecting God has grave consequences.

THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR:

Psalm 31-35

HOW DO YOU DO YOUR WORK?

TEXT: ECCLESIASTES 9:10-12

MEMORY VERSE: "Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest" (ECCLESIASTES 9:10).

The question, "How do you do your work?" is very penitent. The profile of Anita Osareme Omonuwa, a young Nigerian lady, is instructive for youths.

Anita holds first class degrees from the University of Reading, UK (LLB); University of Birmingham, UK (LLM) and the Nigerian Law School (BL) where she received several prizes including: Best Outstanding Academic Performance and Best Student in Corporate Law Practice. This type of feat can only be attained by consistent and diligent hard work. How do you do your work?

Our text admonishes, "Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest" (Ecclesiastes 9:10). Now is the time to work hard, for time waits for no one.

Do your work to excel in your academics, career, spiritual life, and in all your undertakings. Eschew laziness and procrastination. You can excel like Anita if you diligently work hard. Above all, surrender your life to Christ who will empower you to excel.

QUOTE: Do your work to excel.

CHALLENGE: Do your work with diligence.

PRAYER: Help me Lord, to be faithful in all that I do.
