TOPIC: FROM SINKING TO SINGING

TEXT: PSALM 13:1-6

KEY VERSE: "I will sing unto the LORD, because he hath dealt bountifully with me" (PSALM 13:6).

The Duke of Wellington, the British military leader who defeated Napoleon at Waterloo, was not an easy man to serve. He was not one to shower his subordinates with compliments. Yet even Wellington realised that his methods left something to be desired. In his old age, a young lady asked him what he would do differently if he had his life to live all over again. Wellington thought for a moment and then replied, "I'd give more praise".

The psalmist was in deep sorrow for a number of reasons. At a point, he believed he was forsaken by God and thought God was not concerned about him anymore. He equally complained about his enemies being exalted over him. After a while, he was finally able to see the brightness of tomorrow through the clouds of today. His heart rejoiced and he soon began to sing and give praise to God.

Obviously, David had had a fair share of troubles during his lifetime. The unprovoked jealousy from King Saul that greeted his killing of Goliath to free Israel from reproach was one concern. His consequent isolation in the wilderness and caves occasioned by the persecutions he faced, was another. But through all these, David kept his faith and hope alive by singing songs of praise to the Lord.

Singing and giving praise to God can be very helpful when dealing with adverse situations in life. It gives us joy and helps us retain our faith in times of our greatest worries and fears. No matter the adversity we face, we need to understand that it has a lifespan. As Wellington wished, we should switch from lamenting to singing and praising God.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Praising God opens new and brighter chapters.

DEAD GODS AND THE LIVING GOD

TEXT: ACTS 14:8-17

MEMORY VERSE: "And saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein" (ACTS 14:15).

A notable miracle took place at Lystra where a man who was born a cripple was healed as he heard the gospel preached by Paul. The gospel is truly the power of God to give access to salvation, deliverance and healing.

Idols or dead gods should not be compared with the Living God. The people of Lystra being worshippers of idols, were surprised to see what God did through Paul, and mistook a divine miracle for an act of their dead gods. In their gross error, they saw Barnabas and Paul as representatives of Jupiter and Mercurius respectively.

There are many youths who still behave like the people in our text. They put their trust in gods and magical powers. Some youths run after occult people in the name of getting power to pass examinations or get quick wealth. By so doing, many have been lured into errors and snares of Satan who is holding them in captivity.

Those who place other things like academic success and talents above the Living God are idol worshippers too. Idol worshippers should repent now to be saved.

QUOTE: Idol worshippers should repent.

CHALLENGE: Turn from vanities unto the Living God.

PRAYER: Help me Lord, to turn to You.

OBEDIENCE BRINGS BLESSINGS

BIBLE TEXT: PSALM 1:1-3

KEY VERSE: "Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful" (Psalm 1:1).

The Bible reveals to us that Isaac the son of Abraham became more prosperous than the owners of the foreign land where he sojourned. Isaac found favour before God because he was obedient. He dug and found water where others had dug in vain. The people saw that they could not stop him from prospering so they made an agreement of peace with him. This story explains what our Bible passage is teaching us. Do you really want to prosper and have good success? These can only come through (i) Avoiding the way of sin and the company of sinners. (ii) Delighting in the law of the Lord and meditating on it day and night. Anyone that delights in the law of the LORD (the Bible) and meditates on it day and night, shall proper in whatsoever he does.

Abraham, Daniel, Job, Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego, Peter, Paul are examples of people who enjoyed true prosperity, promotion and long life through faith in God and obedience to His word. Being diligent and hardworking is part of obedience to God's word. As you become diligent in your study, the Lord will grant you good success. Therefore, make the Bible your best companion, read it every day, meditate on it, observe to do all that it commands, then share the message with others. This is the sure way to abundant blessings from the Lord.

PRAYER: Father, help me to delight in Your word, and meditate on it day and night.
